The Ed Tech and Instructional Design departments are excited to present a day long conference which will feature some of the newest and best practices in course development and online learning creation.  Many of the lead designers and technologists from our system will showcase products and teach you how to create an immersive and engaging experience in your online classroom.  Sessions will focus on innovative design and trends in delivery technologies.

10:00am     Design for Non-designers: Visual Basics in Canvas

Do you want to create visually engaging courses and pages in Canvas, but you're not really sure where to start? Design is an important part of how we communicate, and in this workshop we will explore the basic art principles and design techniques used to create an effective page in Canvas. We will also discuss common visual design mistakes in eLearning and how to overcome them with a practical, step-by-step design process. Discover best practices in font selection, color, design elements, and slide layouts to define your project’s visual identity.

In this session, we will cover:

• Designing visual style guides for learning projects
• Asking questions that establish the right look and feel of your course
• Choosing and combining the right fonts for every project
• Transforming static words into visual stories

11:00am     Leveraging Alignment of Outcomes in Canvas using Quality Matters and Rubrics

Using the QM rubric’s requirements for alignment, she will show you how to create measurable outcomes that can be perfectly aligned to course assignments. She will also show how outcomes are moved from paper to engaging assignments with clear assessments in Canvas.

At the System level, TCS ES aims to “prepare innovative, engaged, purposeful agents of change who serve our global community.” But this doesn’t happen without the individual missions and passion of the educators at each of our partner colleges. In this session, we’ll ask a teacher or administrator from each school to talk briefly about what drives their day — and what keeps them up at night — in the pursuit of our shared vision.

Do you want to fix something in your course? While having your ID is an amazing resource, it’s empowering to be able to navigate through Canvas as an instructor. There are many features that Canvas offers you that are user friendly and accessible. This session will show you how to use basic features in Canvas.

Have you ever thought about what your instructional designer can do for you? Uploading course content is one of the responsibilities of an ID, but they can provide so much more. This session will highlight a few ways you can work with your ID to enhance your course and your program.

For most students, video communication and integration in the online classroom is not only welcomed, it is expected. But video development can be an intimidating task for many instructors. However daunting video development may seem, using and developing video in Canvas has never been easier. Let’s discuss some simple but effective ways to integrate video communication and instruction in your online classrooms.

In this session we will:

• learn the different needs and reasons for integrating effective eLearning videos
• discover effective tools and features available to faculty and staff

Do you have resources that you want your faculty and/or students to have access to online? Are you looking to bring your students and faculty together online, outside of the classroom? Does your department have so much information for your students and you are wondering how to best disseminate it? We have the answers to these questions and more! Won and Mark will share their experiences with creating resource centers and virtual communities within Canvas and other creative ideas for sharing information online that may not be specific to a course. We hope that you will come away from the session with even more ideas for your department!
